We The Pride MC grew from a fundraiser for a COII Mike Pucci here at SCI-Dallas who had been hit by a drunk driver.  He was badly hurt, out of time and money.  One man thought if ten riders could get together and throw in $10 each they could raise $100 for a CO in need.  He shared the idea with a few riders at work and was directed to Jack Callahan.  Jack and others took the ball and ran with it.  When we showed up for the ride we were shocked to see over 120 bikes and a T-shirt sale.   After the event eight DOC employees decided to start a club to benefit the DOC employees, and the Pride MC was born.  What started out as local club has grown into a National Club with chapters in NY, MD, Oh, and Delaware and several chapters right in Pa.
Here is the way we help DOC Employees.  There are two support systems, the first being the chapter level and the second being the National Board.  The Chapters raise money to support members and a portion of all funds goes to the National Board.  The National Board answers the needs of non-members.  The Chapter is excused from being partisan, or showing favor to staff that may be more popular than others.
All annual dues ($20) or new membership ($30) goes to the National Board.  All proceeds from the annual “Jail Break” go to the National Board.  These funds plus a percentage of all chapter fund raisers all go to help non-members.  To help a non-member all one needs to do is to get the information of the employee to a Pride Member. We will then forward it to the National Board.
The Chapter is responsible for helping chapter members and members may be considered for help by the National Board.  Currently, the Dallas Chapter has 90 Members---DOC staff from Dallas, Retreat, Rockview, Graterford, Camp Hill, Luzerne Co, and USP Canaan.
One third of our members do not ride motorcycles. What we do have in common is a desire to help staff in time of need.
If you know an employee who needs help, let us know.  As in most organizations we at the Chapter level can do more to help members than non-members.  As such we encourage all DOC employees to become Members.

While you as our co-workers have often been approached about fundraisers, we thought it was time for you to see the results of your involvement, membership, purchasing tickets and making donations.  The following is a quote from The Pride’s Past National President, Mark Kilmer, at this past Jail Break:
“I’m going to open the vault here, and I’d like to read you some numbers. These are absolutely staggering to me, and I am proud of our position and what we are as a Motorcycle Club, and even more proud of our accomplishments. These numbers are only made possible by you, the membership and backbone of this club.
  How’s this:

2001-2002        10 families    $2200
2002-2003        20 families    $6650
2003-2004        14 families    $4350
2004-2005        16 families    $7600
2005-2006         8 families    $3600
2006-2007         2 families    $1000

Total of 70 Families and $25,400.00

So I guess I’ll throw in some more food for thought.

We have given away 4 Harley Davidson softails. This year will make 5. WOW. We even gave away a Harley 1200 Roadster in a

Member’s only raffle that celebrated our 5-year anniversary. That’s about $81 thousand dollars worth of Harley Iron…Think of the smiles and excitement we generated. There are many other things that I could highlight here, but I’ll just get to the point. Put these numbers together and you get about $107 thousand dollars we have raised and given away to benefit corrections employees in need…”

At the Dallas Chapter level we have helped 9 Club members with $2,800

And have supported rides and fund raisers helping 6 families of non-members raise $7,900 for a total of $10,700.

Recently we met with the widow of a Correctional Officer who was killed in Iraq to present her with your donations.  She said that she could look for someone to blame, sit home and feel sorry for herself, or she could make a difference.

How about you?  Isn’t it time to join and help make a difference?
